Brazil and Cape Verde decided to deepen bilateral relations in the fields of security, defense, commerce, and culture, Chancellor Ernesto Araújo announced today (Dec. 9) after a meeting with the African country’s Foreign Affairs Minister Luís Filipe Tavares, in the capital city of Praia. The Brazilian minister also met with Cape Verdean Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Minister Luís Filipe Tavares reiterated the interest of Cape Verde in bolstering the ties between the two nations. “Today, Africa is the world’s bride. Americans, Russians, the Chinese, Europeans, and also Brazil, want to strengthen their relations with this continent. Cape Verde wants to take Brazil’s ring to the wedding with Africa.”

Cape Verde, located in a volcanic archipelago near the northwestern coast of Africa, was the first country to be visited on the trip initiated yesterday (8) by Chancellor Ernesto Araújo through nations in West Africa. The next countries to be visited are Senegal, Nigeria, and Angola.

The goal of the minister’s tour is to implement deals in security, defense, commerce, and investment. The chancellor is expected to return to Brazil on December 13. “We’re sowing very interesting initiatives, identifying opportunities to increase investment, trade, and tourism,” he declared.

According to Araújo, Cape Verde may be Brazil’s bridge to the whole continent for cooperation in any field. “Brazil is at a good moment for economic openness. The role of Cape Verde is to contribute to a new partnership with Africa,” he said.

Cooperation

Another topic discussed by the ministers was the defense of the coast near countries in West Africa. After an initiative undertaken by Brazil, the United Nations (UN) in 1986 approved a resolution to defend and use the social and economic potential of this area in the South Atlantic, which is subject to pirate and gang assaults.

Minister Luís Filipe Tavares said that, during the meeting, the Brazilian chancellor expressed his desire to “revive” cooperation with Cape Verde in this arena.
