The Foreign Ministry released a note stating that the Brazilian government, upon learning about the operations conducted by the US in Iraq, supports “the fight against the scourge of terrorism.” The note further says that the country “is ready to take part in international efforts contributing to preventing an aggravation in conflicts at this moment.”

The communication was issued one day after a US operation killed Iran’s main top general Qassem Soleimani in an assault that targeted his convoy in the vicinity of the Baghdad airport. The plan was ordered by US President Donald Trump.

“Upon learning of the actions conducted by the US in Iraq in recent days, the Brazilian government expresses support for the fight against the scourge of terrorism and reiterates that this fight requires the collaboration of all the international community, with no attempts to justify pr downplay terrorism,” the text reads.

The ministry failed to mention the Iranian general’s death, but condemned the attack on the US embassy in Baghdad. “Brazil likewise condemns the assaults on the US embassy in Baghdad, which took place in the last few days, and calls for compliance with the Vienna Convention and the integrity of US diplomatic agents recognized by the Iraqi government in that country.”

Terrorism, the ministry declared, cannot be considered a problem limited to the Middle East. It also states that Brazil must not “remain indifferent to this threat, which also affects South America.”

The statement also reports that the government has kept a watchful eye on developments following the operation in Iraq, “including its impact on oil prices, and calls for all nations to join efforts against terrorism in all of its forms.”
