“We have no alternative but to unite,” says Lula in Argentina
After assuming the temporary presidency of Mercosur, Brazilian President Lula stated Tuesday (Jul. 4) that the world is becoming increasingly complex and challenging, and no country will solve its problems alone, nor can any nation remain oblivious to the dilemmas facing society today.
“We have no alternative but to unite. To tackle the climate crisis, we must act in coordination to protect our biomes and achieve a just ecological transition. In the face of wars that bring destruction, suffering, and impoverishment, we must speak of peace. In a world increasingly marked by geopolitical competition, our choice at regional level must be cooperation and solidarity.”
In his address, Lula mentioned the surge in hatred, intolerance, and lies in politics, and stressed the need to renew Mercosur’s historical commitment to the rule of law.
“As democratically elected presidents, we have the challenge of confronting all those who attempt to appropriate and distort democracy. I am convinced that the construction of a more democratic and participatory Mercosur is the path we must take,” the Brazilian leader declared.
Argentine President Alberto Fernández
At the opening of the 62nd Summit of the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) and Associated Countries in Puerto Iguazú, Argentine President Alberto Fernández commented on the transfer of the pro-tempore presidency to Brazil for the next six months.
“I have no intention to conceal the immense affection and deep admiration I feel for [Lula]. He was a victim of persecution and injustice. But the Brazilian people knew how to remedy this by giving him the leadership of this sister nation. Dear friend, I wish you the best. You deserve it. We are together in this bloc that strengthens us. Without it, in an international landscape of countries forming huge economic blocs, we would be weaker and smaller. Let’s be strong and protect our interests.”
