French president praises Brazil’s stance on Venezuela
French President Emmanuel Macron phoned President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Monday (Aug. 5). In the call, the European leader praised the Brazilian government’s position of encouraging dialogue between President Nicolás Maduro and the Venezuelan opposition following the elections in the South American country on July 28.
According to the Planalto presidential palace, the French president also commended the joint stance of Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. In a statement last Thursday, the three nations called for the impasse surrounding the Venezuelan elections to be resolved through institutional means. “President Lula reiterated his commitment to finding a peaceful solution between the parties that respects the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people,” the statement says on the talk with President Macron.
President Lula is also reported to have thanked Macron for welcoming the Brazilian delegation and the country’s first lady, Janja da Silva, to the European country, where the 2024 Olympic Games are being held.
The Venezuelan Supreme Court of Justice has ordered the Venezuelan National Electoral Council to present the electoral minutes for each polling station in the presidential election later this week.
President Lula is in Santiago, Chile, where he is on a state visit and taking part in the signing of a number of bilateral agreements.
