Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated the president-elect of Uruguay, Yamandú Orsi, on his victory at the polls on Sunday (Nov. 24). The candidate of the left-wing Broad Front coalition won the second round of the presidential elections in a victory that marks the return to power of the party led by former Uruguayan President José Mujica.

“I’d like to congratulate the Uruguayan people for holding democratic and peaceful elections, and in particular President-elect Yamandú Orsi, the Broad Front, and my friend Pepe Mujica for their victory in today’s election. This is a victory for all of Latin America and the Caribbean,” President Lula wrote on social media.

Mercosur

“Brazil and Uruguay will continue to work together in Mercosur and other forums for fair and sustainable development, peace, and regional integration,” the Brazilian president added.

Orsi beat center-right challenger Álvaro Delgado, of the National Party, who was backed by Uruguay’s current President Luis Lacalle Pou.
