Number of rioters indicted for pro-coup acts in Brasília reaches 653
Brazil’s Attorney General's Office (PGR) denounced, between January 31 and February 2, 152 people for their involvement in terrorist acts that resulted in the invasion and depredation of three public buildings on January 8 in Brasília, namely the National Congress, Planalto presidential palace and the Supreme Court. According to PGR, so far a total of 653 people suspected of participating in the pro-coup acts have been denounced.
The accusations, signed by deputy-attorney general Carlos Frederico Santos, explain the sequence of events that led to the formation of a camp in front of the Army Headquarters in the capital of the country.
According to the pleadings, the camp had an "evident structure to guarantee perenniality, stability, and permanence" of the demonstrators that defended the seizure of power.
In addition to the conviction for the crimes pointed out, the deputy-attorney general pleads that those involved also be sentenced to the payment of a minimum compensation, as provided for in the Code of Criminal Procedure, "at least on account of the collective moral damage evidenced by the practice of the crimes charged."
Accused rioters
The accused rioters were arrested in the camp in front of the Army Headquarters, in Brasilia, and are being held in units of the Federal District's prison system, after preventive arrests were decreed and respective custody hearings were carried out. They are accused of criminal association and of inciting animosity in the Armed Forces against the Constitutional Powers, both provided for in the Penal Code.
The pleadings also request that the crimes be considered autonomously and the sentences be added together.
Celerity
Because of the high number of lawsuits, and with the objective of speeding up the progress of the processes that may arise from the charges brought against those involved in the acts, the deputy-attorney general, who also coordinates the Strategic Group for the Fight against Anti-Democratic Acts, requested the opening of a national consultation, so that prosecutors from all over Brazil can contribute to the work. The interested parties will support the group in the procedural instruction of the cases.
