Brazilian Federal police arrest Robinho, convicted of rape
Former soccer player Robson de Souza, known as Robinho, was arrested by the Federal Police on Thursday night (Mar. 21).
The arrest warrant was issued by the Fifth Federal Court in Santos, a coastal city in the state of São Paulo, where the former player lives.
Earlier that day, Maria Thereza de Assis Moura, President of the Superior Court of Justice (STJ), signed the authorization for the Federal Court to arrest Robinho. Seeking to avoid imprisonment, his defense filed a habeas corpus request with the Federal Supreme Court, which Justice Luiz Fux denied in a monocratic decision.
On Wednesday (20), the Special Court of the STJ decided by a vote of 9 to 2 that the former player must serve his 9-year prison sentence for rape in Brazil. This sentence was imposed by the Italian courts, where he was convicted on three counts of rape stemming from an incident at a Milan nightclub in 2013.
