The Social Democratic Party (“PSD”) announced on Wednesday (Jun 25) their official decision to endorse the re-election bid of President Dilma Rousseff and Michel Temer, her running mate from the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (“PMDB”). The alliance was approved during the primary convention of the nearly 2-year-old party.

Reiterating her intention to carry out a peaceful campaign as a response to the criticism from the opposition, Rousseff expressed her gratitude for the choice. “I’m happy to have by my side a party which represents one of the most promising novelties in politics – for its sober, moderate and constructive character. [It is] a party that reaches and seeks to strengthen consensus, promotes understanding, and finds new solutions during a time when some preach hate and confrontation,” she said.

The national president of the party, former São Paulo Mayor Gilberto Kassab, declared that PSD will always strive for consensus in order to develop proposals side by side with the government. “We’re partners of the president in the ascension of classes, in the motivation for work, in the attainment of housing.”

However, Rousseff’s re-election bid has not been met with the approval of all states. In many of them, alliances are being made according to local interests. In São Paulo, for instance, instead of backing the current president, from the Workers Party (“PT”), Kassab wants the party to appoint their own candidate to run for governor. Also, a possible competitor is on the horizon: former Central Bank president Henrique Meirelles.

The Popular Party (“PP”), which participates in Rousseff’s administration, also announced on Wednesday (25) their support for Rousseff’s candidacy for re-election. The decision was made by the party’s National Executive Committee at a quick meeting held at the office of PP president Ciro Nogueira. The national convention had previously ended tumultuously, as several leaders failed to come to a compromise on their position regarding PT’s candidate.
