Election runoff phase kicks off
The Chief Justice at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Dias Toffoli, has officially disclosed the results of the first round of Brazil's presidential elections. The announcement was made at a plenary session on Tuesday (Oct. 7).
The Workers' Party (PT) candidate running for re-election, Dilma Rousseff, won 41.59% of valid votes, as against 33.55% garnered by Aécio Neves, who is running under Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB). The official announcement of the results marks the start of the runoff phase, with the polls set to take place on October 26.
In addition to choosing Brazil's next president between Rousseff and Neves, Brazilians will vote for governor in the 14 states where none of the candidates succeeded in securing an absolute majority of the valid votes in the first round.
Following this official announcement, electioneering communications are now allowed to resume on Thursday (9). Each presidential and governor candidate will have 10 minutes' air time to promote their proposals and ask for votes.
