Evo MoralesRoosewelt Pinheiro/Agência BrasilEvo Morales has been elected for his third term as the president of Bolivia, according to unofficial data. The polls took place on Sunday (Oct. 12).

He gave a speech thanking the support of six million voters even before the official results, though his victory was largely expected with the first exit poll indicating he had more than 60% of the vote. He promised to maintain his economic growth model until 2020, the results of which were praised by such organizations as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

The first indigenous president of Bolivia and in South America, Evo Morales successfully eradicated illiteracy, reduced poverty and inequality and maintained a high growth rate in the nine years of his administration. This year, according to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), Bolivia is the country with the best growth outlook in South America, 5.5% – more than twice the average for the region.
