Chief of Staff Aloizio Mercadante said he believes in a partnership between the Executive and the Legislative for the approval of fiscal adjustment measures put forth by the government. In his view, the National Congress “has never failed the country”, and “will not do it now.”

“We've established a dialogue with the parties' representatives in Congress, who have welcomed the arguments and fundamentals for the fiscal adjustment. I think we'll work in partnership with Congress, because I see a great responsibility in the main political leaders [in this connection],” said the minister, in an interview at the presidential palace.

Mercadante said that 80% of the adjust depends on the government and that the measures are necessary in order for growth to be recovered. “We must implement the fiscal adjustment, and that's what we're going to do. The faster, the better for the country,” he said.

As regards the anti-government demonstrations staged during Rousseff's pronouncement on TV and radio, he said that such protests are part and parcel of democracy and one of the rights of every citizen. According to the minister, the outcome of the latest election should be acknowledged, and dialogue between divergent parties promoted.

In Mercadante's view, dialogue and tolerance are crucial to creating an agenda to reunite the country and help the nation overcome its  difficulties, ensuring economic stability and setting economic growth back on the rise.
