In his remarks on the upcoming anti-government protests next Sunday (Mar. 15), Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo dismissed the existing calls to remove President Dilma Rousseff from power. “We had a legitimate election. Democracy exists in this country. There are no legal grounds whatsoever to change what has been done. So I 'd ask both the people who approve of the government and those who don't to stand up for what they believe in but do so within the limits of law and order and the democratic principles.”

He spoke out for freedom of expression and respect for the constituted authority and warned against what he referred to as “putschism”. “The government preaches tolerance to people who don't share our views – this is a virtue of democracy, and the government embraces this openness. Only we would ask people who don't approve of the government not to turn the whole thing into hate action. They're welcome to express their views democratically and seek some level of understanding where possible,” he said after a ceremony at the Ministry of Justice on Wednesday (Mar. 11).
