Public consultation to provide input for anti-corruption efforts
Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo opened Monday (June 8) a public consultation to obtain input from organizations and individuals on ways to address corruption and money laundering in Brazil. The initiative was announced following a meeting with the Integrated Management Office of the National Anti-Corruption and Money Laundering Strategy, bringing together representatives from the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary branches.
The public consultation will be available until July 8, at http://participacao.mj.gov.br/anticorrupcao. Respondents can access a number of proposals for preventing and combating corruption and register to make suggestions. Proposals can result in bills for Congress approval or administrative measures to be implemented by the appropriate bodies.
According to the minister, the purpose is to “improve the legal and administrative proceedings to investigate and hold accountable those engaging in corrupt practices and misconduct. There is a very strong, and even accurate feeling among Brazilians that these offenses end up unpunished. So we need a framework that empowers the Brazilian State to investigate and punish wrongdoers,” the minister said.
The working group that drafted the proposal for public consultation is part of the Integrated Anti-Corruption Management Office and consists of representatives from the National Council of Justice, the National Council of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Comptroller-General's Office, the Attorney-General's Office, and the Bar Association of Brazil (OAB).
