In Brasília, Workers' Party activists watched the party broadcast on an outdoor big screen in front of the TV tower, a local tourist hotspotValter Campanato/Agência Brasil

The Workers' Party (PT) aired a radio and TV advertisement on Thursday (Aug. 6) that discussed the challenges facing Brazil and listed social improvements and government policies in recent years. The first political speaker was PT Chairman Rui Falcão, who acknowledged the current economic difficulties “that many other countries are facing as well.”

In her address, President Dilma Rousseff expressed confidence that Brazil will succeed in getting over the present difficulties. “Anyone who thinks that we lack energy and ideas to overcome these problems is mistaken,” she said. Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also spoke about the crisis. “I know that crisis has hit our homes. But what I also know is that this is not the first crisis we've faced,” he said.

In the capital, Brasilia, party activists watched the broadcast on outdoor big screens and set off fireworks during and after airing. In Brasília and in major Brazilian cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, people were banging pots and pans, sounding horns and expressing disapproval at various locations during the broadcast.
