Congress maintains Rousseff vetoes on cost-incurring proposals
Congress President Renan Calheiros closed the session before the members could deliberate on vetoes on sensitive issues
In a joint Congress session that ended in the first hours of Wednesday (Sept. 23), deputies and senators voted to maintain President Dilma Rousseff's vetoes on bills that would have incurred increased government costs, including bills to tighten social security eligibility rules and a proposed tax exemption on diesel.
The parliament also maintained another 22 out of an agenda of 32 vetoes on a number of legislative bills. The first veto to be maintained was on a bill changing retirement rules that would have increased Social Security costs by $33.40 billion by 2035.
The veto on the bill to grant a tax exemption on diesel has saved the government $740 million this year alone.
The Congress session began at about 21h on Tuesday (22) and was closed due to a low quorum following over five hours of voting. Opposition parties filibustered, and Congress President Renan Calheiros closed the session before the members could deliberate on vetoes on sensitive issues, including the one to raise the pay of Judiciary officials and a bill extending minimum wage increases to pensioners.
