Congress sets deadline for government's defense of 2014 accounting practices
Senate President Renan Calheiros imposed the deadline of 45 days for the government to present a defense to the Federal Court of Account's (TCU) recommendation to reject the 2014 president Dilma Rousseff's government accounting practices. After the end of the period, all documents, including TCU vote and government's defense, should be analyzed by Congress' Joint Committee on Budget (CMO).
Senator Acir Gurgacz, the CMO's appointed rapporteur of the process this Wednesday (Oct. 21), said the work will be conducted impartially and quickly. He also said that the report could be announced later this year. "We can deliver the report at the moment we receive the process, already adding the [government's] defense to it,” declared the rapporteur.
Gurgacz signaled they will begin to analyze the court's recommendation this Thursday (Oct. 22) to accelerate the report's production before the process officially arrives at the CMO. The committee's report will then be submitted to vote in Congress.
In its recommendation, the TCU pointed out several irregularities that occurred in the government accounting practices, like not meeting the deadline from the Federal Public Debt to transfer funds for the government's expenses on social programs to state-owned banks, in addition to state-owned firms reporting spending above the allowed limit.
TCU vote to reject the government accounting practices has led to requests for the impeachment of the president of the republic.
