Justice Minister asks for clarification of subpoena on ex-president Lula's son
Justice Minister José Eduardo Cardozo has asked the Federal Police General Director, Leandro Daielo, to provide explanations for the subpoena on Luiz Cláudio Lula da Silva, the son of former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Minister Cardozo was prompted by a suspicion circulated by the media reports that the subpoena was not in accordance with the ordinary procedure of the Federal Police.
The subpoena was issued Tuesday (Oct. 27), the day former president Lula celebrated his 70th birthday. Luiz Cláudio was approached by Federal Police officers at his home at 11pm.
The police decided to hear the former president's son after a search and seizure raid on the headquarters of LFT sports marketing and Touchdown sporting events firms, where Luiz Cláudio is a partner. The crackdown was part of the fourth stage of Operation Zealots tax bribery probe.
On Thursday (Oct. 29), the same day Cardozo made his request, Judge Célia Regina Ody Bernardes of the Federal District, in charge of Operation Zealots investigations, disclaimed knowledge of the subpoena.
However, it was Bernardes herself who issued the search and seizure warrant at the request of the Federal Police to raid the office of the former president's son, on the grounds that it found “very suspicious” that LFT received $381,400 from Marcondes Mautoni consulting firm, a government contractor investigated under Operation Zealots.
