A delegation of 24 high-level experts from the United Nations (UN) is in Belém, Pará state, on a mission to observe the preparations for the 30th Climate Change Conference–COP30–to be held from November 10 to 21.

On the first day of field visits, the group met with representatives of the organizing committees of federal, state, and municipal governments. Throughout the week, group members should become acquainted with hotel infrastructure, logistical planning, transportation, public safety, and health-care infrastructure.

According to Deputy Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) Noura Hamladji, the mission is not evaluative, but rather aims to support the organization in making COP30 a success.

“I’m really impressed not just with the planning, but also with the level of investment—BRL 5 billion—not to mention the commitment of the authorities from the federal government, the state government, and also the municipality here in Belém. These are the key ingredients for success,” she said, after hearing the figures presented by Valter Correia, extraordinary secretary for COP30.

The Brazilian government expects to welcome some 100 thousand visitors over the two weeks of the conference. Tourism is expected to be an important legacy for the Amazon, Valter Correia said. “We are working tirelessly to deliver a COP that has all the conditions to guarantee the success of global climate negotiations,” he declared.

In addition to government investments in infrastructure, efforts include improving the metropolitan region’s hotel network, building more accommodations, training tourism professionals in sustainability, and renovating tourist attractions.
