José Carlos Araujo: "If we can speed it up within the law, we'll do it” Fabio Rodrigues Pozzebom/Agência Brasil

The chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, José Carlos Araújo, said Wednesday (Oct. 14) that he “sees a possibility” of completing proceedings for unethical conduct against the speaker of the house, Eduardo Cunha, before the Congress recess begins on December 22. The case could lead up to Cunha's removal from office.

Under the internal rules of the Chamber of Deputies, the whole process could take a maximum 90 days, but Araújo said he believes there are steps that could be sped up: “The Ethics Committee says it has up to 90 days. Of course [even] if we can rush it through, there are deadlines we shouldn't be cutting through for nothing. But if we can speed it up within the law, we'll do it.”

The complaint against Cunha was filed with the Ethics Committee (Out. 13) by the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) and the Sustainability Network (REDE) and signed by 48 members of Congress from these and five other parties (PMDB, PPS, PT, PROS, and PSB). The shortlist for potential rapporteurs on the case will be decided in a draw from among the 21 members of the Committee.

Deputy José Carlos Araújo said he expects the meeting of the Ethics Committee to appoint a rapporteur and begin the investigate proceedings to take place on October 27.
