Case against Cunha moves forward after Ethics Council vote
With 11 votes against 9, the Council of Ethics of the Chamber of Deputies approved Deputy Marcos Rogério's preliminary report upholding the motion against lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha, of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB).
The decision is a step forward in the case for stripping Cunha of his license. Cunha has been charged with passive corruption, money laundering, and for having lied before the Congressional Committee of Investigation on Petrobras by denying having secret bank accounts overseas. There were no abstentions in the ballot.
The deputy will be notified and given 10 days to submit his defense in writing to the Council of Ethics.
Operation Catilinárias
On Tuesday morning (Dec. 15), the Federal Police served a search and seizure warrant at the official residence of Eduardo Cunha in Brasília and also in his private home in Rio de Janeiro.
The raids are part of a new phase of Operation Car Wash named after Cicero's Catilinarian Orations. They were authorized by Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki.
