Former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defended the Congress should have celerity to make the decision on President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment. For him, the country cannot wait long for a definition to this political issue. He made the statement on Thursday (Dec. 3) after meeting with Rio de Janeiro Governor Luiz Fernando Pezão.

"I think we need to decide [on impeachment] soon. Because if we are going to wait for passing Christmas, passing February, passing  the carnival, what will be the political environment here in Brazil? Which investor will want to invest in Brazil? Which Brazilian executive will want to put money into the economy, if the political system is not appeased at least?", demanded Lula.

The former president suggested a coalition of governors with Rousseff for not accepting the theory of worse is better. He reported that the Northeastern governors have already signed a manifesto declaring support for the president. "I think Pezão can enlist many governors to support the president. He even suggested [calling] a meeting with governors at Palácio do Planalto [presidential office], to declare that impeachment comes from irresponsible people."

About accepting the impeachment request, Lula said Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha should not have personal motives above the country's interests. "It seems to me that the lower house speaker has made his decision of not worrying about Brazil. It seems to me that his priority is to worry about himself, when this 210-million people country should be more important than any of us," pointed out the former president.

Lula ruled out the possibility of President Rousseff havind made any political bargaining with Eduardo Cunha for not initiating impeachment proceedings. "I know Dilma, and it is very hard for anyone to imagine her making any bargain. It is very difficult," he suggested.

For the former president, without the economic reforms—which in his opinion are taking too long to be adopted—Brazil will not recover growth. "The country has plunged into a turmoil one year ago. The reform that should have been voted is taking too long, and without approving the reform, we cannot recover the economy as it should be recovered."
