Bar association urges removal of Eduardo Cunha as lower house speaker
The President of the Bar Association of Brazil (OAB), Cláudio Lamachia, submitted a document to the chairman of the Ethics Board of the Chamber of Deputies, José Carlos Araújo, urging immediate removal of Eduardo Cunha from his position as lower house speaker.
According to OAB, the call is an attempt to ensure investigation of a complaint against Cunha pending before the Board of Ethics. “We are speaking out to ensure this case can be freely investigated and handled and to prevent tricks in the guise of a regular action by an individual who has power as the speaker of the house,” said Lamachia.
According to him, the document submitted Tuesday (Feb. 16) by OAB is not a legal action. “We are speaking out to the House of Deputies to express the expert opinion of 81 board members of the Brazilian Bar Association. [In doing so,] we make no representations as to whether Cunha is guilty or not. We are just saying that if he continues in his position as house speaker this will interfere directly with the proceedings,” he said.
