Payments to João Santana legal, Jaques Wagner says
The president's Chief of Staff Jaques Wagner said on his Twitter page that the services provided by adman João Santana during the campaigns of President Rousseff, former President Lula and São Paulo Mayor Haddad followed the law. The minister quoted from a report drawn up by the Federal police which states “unequivocally”, he says, that no signs of wrongdoing was found in connection with the payments.
This Tuesday (Feb. 23), João Santana and his wife and partner Mônica Moura were arrested after landing in Brazil from the Dominican Republic, for having their temporary arrest ordered by Judge Sergio Moro. Probes launched under Operation Car Wash had indicated they had received money from construction company Odebrecht as payment for services during Rousseff's campaign.
“The 23rd phase of Operation Car Wash does not probe into supposed irregularities associated with Rousseff's campaign. The accounts from the president's campaign were declared and approved by the [Superior Electoral Court]. The amounts paid for the services provided during Lula's, Haddad's, and Rousseff's campaigns observed the law,” the minister wrote on his Twitter account. This is the first time a cabinet member made a public pronouncement on the matter.
