The Supreme Court announced it is set to rule on the motion requesting the removal of Eduardo Cunha, speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Thursday (May 5). The case was filed yesterday with the top court by the Sustainability Network party, founded by ex-minister and former presidential hopeful Marina Silva.
The party maintains that Cunha must not hold his position as he is facing criminal charges with the Supreme Court for allegedly having received $5 million in bribes through drillship contracts in the government-controlled oil giant Petrobras. According to the political party, Cunha is next in line for the presidency, a position that cannot be occupied by a defendant.
