When attending the opening ceremony of Klabin's new paper mill, the country's largest paper producer and exporter, interim President Michel Temer pointed out this Tuesday (Jun. 28) the private sector's role in the country's development. The new unit, called Puma, is in the town of Ortigueira, in Paraná state.

"From time to time, I have been mentioning that the private sector is the one responsible for helping the country grow. A strong country is a country supported by the private sector's actions," said Temer during his speech. The mill opened today attracted $2.5 billion in investments, about 40% of the money, around $1.20 billion, was funded by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES).

In his address, Temer also expressed “great joy" at privatized schools in the region. "When I see, with great joy, that here almost all the schools have been privatized, that is, 29 schools in the region, I feel their social concern."

BNDES

After the event, Temer was interviewed and spoke about the government's decision to withdraw $30 billion in funds transferred by the Treasury to the BNDES. Such withdrawal may withhold funding for works such as Klabin's. However, Temer pledged that the development bank will have resources to invest in new ventures.

"The first point is that over $120 billion will be left for the BNDES. The second point is that $30 billion, which will be gradually withdrawn, had been negotiated with the BNDES." He added that Maria Silvia Bastos Marques, heading the BNDES, does not regard it as a problem.

Temer mentioned again that, even though this is an interim and recent government, he has managed to approve important measures and to "pacify" the country. "I'm the head of government for a very short period and, actually, we have been acting to a kind of national pacification, a movement towards having the national thought reunified, having everyone engaged, as we see people engaged here, in the country's growth."

Works on Klabin's new paper mill were concluded in 24 months and the unit will have a production capacity of 1.5 million tons of pulp, and estimates to create 1,400 direct and indirect jobs.
