Opinion poll: 40.4% of Brazilians disapprove of Temer's job as president

Respondents believe Rousseff will be impeached and mention employment

A survey conducted by pollster MDA at the request of the Confederation of Transport (CNT) was released today (Jun. 8), and found that 11.3% of Brazilians evaluate acting President Michel Temer positively and 28% negatively. In the view of 30.2% of respondents, the current administration is OK, whereas 30.5% said they did not have an opinion.

Regarding Temer's job as president, 40.4% disapprove of it, against 33.8% who approve of his performance. In a comparison drawn between Temer's and Dilma Rousseff's administrations, 54.8% of the respondents said both governments are the same and noticed no significant change in the country since Temer took office as interim president. For 20.1%, the current government is better than the previous one, whereas 14% describe it as worse.

The study reveals that 46.6% of Brazilians believe that corruption in Temer's government will be equivalent to that seen under Rousseff. Also according to the CNT, 28.3% believe that corruptions levels will be lower, while 18.6% argue the problem will be more severe.

Impeachment

The CNT asked what Brazilians think about the impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff: 62.4% of the respondents answered that ousting the president was the right decision, and 33% said it was a mistake. Also, 61.5% said the case was legitimate; 33.3% argued the opposite. In the opinion of 68.2%, Rousseff will be impeached and Temer will stay in office, whereas 25.3% believing Rousseff will resume her term of office.

Even though the impeachment effort was based on delays in transferring amounts to public banks to provide payment for the government's social benefits through accounting tricks referred to as fiscal backpedaling, 44.1% of those interviewed say the reason for unseating the president was corruption in the federal government, 37.3% mention tampering with Operation Car Wash. A mere 33.2% name the accounting practices as the reason.

Brazilian democracy will come out stronger after the impeachment proceedings are over, according to 45.6% of the respondents. On the other hand, 34.4% maintain that democracy will be harmed. Bringing the 2018 elections forward to this year is viewed as a good idea by 50.3% of Brazilians; 46.1% disagree.

Operation Car Wash

The study also shows that 89.3% of the people say they have been following the developments of the operation or have heard of it. Of this amount, 66.9% blame Rousseff for the corruption under investigation. Among those who consider themselves informed about the crackdown, 71.4% claim former President Lula should take the blame.

As for priorities lying ahead, 57% believe the most important is employment generation. Second on the list is improvements in health care (41.4%), followed by fighting corruption (30.6%). Better results in the economy are a priority for 24.7%, and cutting government expenditures is mentioned by 15.5%. Security comes next (14.8%), followed in turn by the necessary overhauls in the government (6.8%).

The CNT/MDA survey heard 2002 people in 137 municipalities in 25 states from June 2 to 5. The margin of error is 2.2 percentage points, with a confidence level of 95%.
