Brazil: Temer goes to UN to show country is safe for investment
In observance of a tradition initiated in 1947 by Brazilian Ambassador Osvaldo Aranha, the first United Nations (UN) secretary general, it will be Michel Temer's task to open the 71st UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday (Sep. 20).
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, published Thursday (15), the Brazilian president mentioned the goals of his trip: to show foreign investors and executives that Brazil is open and willing to do business in a safe way. During the interview, Temer said that political uncertainties in Brazil are now on the wane.
Extensive schedule
According to the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Temer will talk about the economic landscape, international trade, climate change, the refugee crisis, peace, and international security. Ambassador Fernando Magalhães noted that the UN governance reform is also to be brought into the discussion, “not only that of the Security Council, but also the one affecting work methods in a broader way.”
On Monday (19) Temer will attend the meeting convened by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to address large movements of refugees and migrants and is expected to approve a policy decision for the negotiation process on refugees that can be extended up to 2018. Two global agreements will be negotiated: "About a shared responsibility for refugees" and "Safe, regular and orderly migration."
The president will officially submit Brazil's instruments of ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change, signed last Monday.
Bilateral meetings are planned with the presidents of Nigeria, Portugal and Uruguay, and more meetings can be scheduled in the next few days, according to the Foreign Ministry. Temer will also attend a meeting with the executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, Klaus Schwab.
The theme for the general debate of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly is “The Sustainable Development Goals, a universal push to transform our world.”
