Education Minister says attacks on ministry building carried out by “criminals”

While senators started the vote on the bill limiting public spending, protesters gathered on the Esplanade of Ministries to demonstrate against the move which, according to the opposition, may restrain funds for health care and education. The rally was organized by trade unions and students was marked by violent clashes with the military police. The building of the Ministry of Education was stormed as glass windows were shattered and equipment wrecked.
On Wednesday morning (Nov. 30), Education Minister Mendonça Filho stated that the major damage wasn't the doing of “students,” but rather “criminals.”

The building of the Ministry of Education was stormed as glass windows were shattered and equipment wrecked.
“It was the criminal act of vandals who stormed in and broke glass windows, benches, and chairs, and damaged a significant part of the ministry's property, terrorizing employees, who ran off the building. The federal police have been called to investigate into the actions of the criminal vandals who invaded the ministry yesterday,” the ministry said.
The losses are still being estimated, he said.
