President Michel Temer has publicly lamented the death of Federal Supreme Court (STF) Justice Teori Zavascki. Speaking to the press, Temer said he received the news of his death with "deep sorrow" and declared three days of mourning as a "modest tribute" to Zavascki.

"At this moment of grief, my team and I would like to express our condolences to the family of the justice and the rest of the people on the flight. Teori was a good man and made all Brazilians proud," said the president.

He also lamented the loss of a "public man, whose impeccable trajectory in favor of law and justice always stood him apart."

Teori Zavascki died Thursday (Jan. 19) afternoon in a plane crash off the coast of Rio de Janeiro state. The plane left São Paulo carrying five passengers and crashed near the town of Paraty.

The body of the justice and two other passengers had been recovered and are already in the Legal Medical Institute of Angra dos Reis, a nearby town. Firefighters are working to remove two bodies trapped in the wreckage of the crash.

Member of the Supreme Court since 2012, Zavascki presided Operation Car Wash proceedings in the Court.
