Brazil president calls for coordinated efforts against crime

President Michel Temer said fighting organized crime demands the coordinated efforts of a several levels of governments and a number of national security forces. In a message sent Friday (Oct. 27) to Brazilian state governors gathered in Rio Branco, Acre, to discuss ways to tackle drug trafficking and border surveillance, Temer admitted that public security issues are “complex” and cannot be solved without the help of everybody.
“The summit of the three government branches has been mobilized to turn the priority of bringing security to Brazilian cities into concrete actions,” the president declared.
“In order to fight violence in our cities,” he added, “guns must be prevented from entering the country. Also, in order to dismantle criminal organizations, their main source of funds must be attacked: drugs, which also cross our national borders to feed gangs that threaten the peace and quiet of our families daily.”
