Brazil Congress discusses fake news in 2018 elections

A bicameral committee has been put together to address the issue

Senator Davi Alcolumbre, head of the Brazilian Congress, on Wednesday (Jul 3) created a congressional committee of investigation on the use of fake news in the 2018 elections.

The committee was approved with the signatures of 276 deputies and 48 senators. The committee will have 180 days to prove into “allegations of cyber attacks against democracy and the public debate, online bullying, the use of fake profiles to influence the 2018 elections, enticement of children in hate crimes and suicide, and against authorities.”

The committee will be installed after political parties appoint its members. Altogether, 15 deputies and 15 senators will take part in it.
