Workers’ Party confirms Alckmin as Lula’s running mate
Leaders from the Workers’ Party (PT) have approved the appointment of former São Paulo governor Geraldo Alckmin, of the PSB, on the vice-presidential ticket with former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The alliance to run in the October presidential elections was unveiled last week but was pending assessment by party directors.
Despite the move on Wednesday (Apr. 13), the parties should not officially announce their future ticket until May.
At the same meeting, the PT also approved the creation of a federation with the PCdoB and the PV. The decision had been made last month by the parties but also hinged on a formal decision from directors.
The law on party federations was approved in August last year in Congress. Parties joining under a federation must stick together for at least four years, with a joint statute and displaying consistent behavior among bench members. Forging federations is often the preferred choice of small parties averting restraints for not reaching the minimum electoral threshold.
In 2006, Lula and Alckmin vied in the second round of the presidential elections, when the onetime president was elected for a second term.
