President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recalled today (Feb. 8) the coup attacks on January 8th, in Brasília, marking the first month after the acts. On that occasion, terrorists invaded and destroyed the Palácio do Planalto, the Federal Supreme Court and the National Congress.

The video posted on the president's social media features footage from the security cameras at the headquarters of the Executive Branch during the acts of destruction, the damage that was left and the first actions to collect traces for investigation of those responsible and cleaning spaces.

“On January 8th, the seat of our powers was invaded and vandalized by people who disrespect Brazil. One month later, we remain firm working in defense of democracy, union and reconstruction of the country”, wrote the president. “Democracy is the most precious asset of the Brazilian population. And justice will be firm against anyone who tries to take it away from the people,” he added.

A month after the acts of vandalism, investigations are still ongoing . Yesterday (7th), the Federal Police (PF) carried out the fifth phase of Operation Lesa Pátria, which seeks to identify people who participated, financed or encouraged the invasion and depredation of the headquarters buildings of the Three Powers.

In addition, the Federal Court has already ordered the blocking of R$ 18.5 million in assets of persons and companies investigated, to ensure that those responsible are able to pay for part of the damage resulting from the destruction of public facilities and the historical and artistic heritage displayed in the buildings. The Attorney General's Office of the Union requested the increase of the blockage to R$20.7 billion, after recalculation of the damage in the Chamber of Deputies.

The federal government will also propose measures to toughen legislation on crimes against the democratic rule of law. The initiative is a reaction to terrorist acts and has been dubbed the Democracy Package.
