Brazilian president reiterates concern for civilians in Gaza Strip

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva reiterated, during a phone conversation with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, his concern for the civilian population, including Brazilians and individuals from other countries who are trying to leave the Gaza Strip, a region surrounded by Israeli armed forces.
In a statement released on Monday (Oct. 16), the Planalto presidential palace also conveyed that "the Brazilian president and the European Council president agreed on the importance of establishing a humanitarian corridor for the entry of medicines and food to aid the civilians in Gaza, as well as for the release of the hostages [held by the Hamas group]."
According to the Planalto statement, Lula and Charles Michel reiterated their condemnation of the terrorist acts committed by Hamas and stressed the significance of strengthening the Palestinian Authority as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people.
President Lula requested that these stances, as outlined in the note, be reaffirmed during the upcoming extraordinary meeting of the European Council, comprising the heads of state and government from the 27 European Union countries, scheduled for this Tuesday (17), in Brussels, Belgium.
UN resolution
The United Nations (UN) Security Council, comprising 15 member countries and currently presided over by Brazil in October, is scheduled to reconvene this Tuesday with the aim of brokering a resolution facilitating the establishment of a humanitarian corridor and the potential adoption of a ceasefire amidst the warring factions. The text crafted by Brazil is anticipated to undergo a voting process. During the previous meeting on Monday (16), Russia tabled a resolution which did not receive approval.
