Lula appoints new Human Rights Minister
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has appointed Workers' Party State Representative Macaé Evaristo as the new Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship. Evaristo, who met with Lula at the Planalto presidential palace on Monday (Sep. 9), confirmed her acceptance of the role during their meeting.
“Today I invited State Representative Macaé Evaristo to take over the Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship. She accepted,” Lula stated in a post on social media.
In response, Macaé Evaristo expressed her deep honor in accepting the invitation via social media. “Our country faces significant challenges, and this is a call of great responsibility. We have much work ahead of us, and I remain hopeful, committed for life to the fight for rights,” she said.
The Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship is currently under the interim leadership of Esther Dweck, Minister of Management and Innovation in Public Services. On Friday (6), Silvio Almeida, the former head of the ministry, was dismissed following accusations of moral and sexual harassment, which he denies.
Career
Macaé Evaristo holds a degree in Social Work, a master’s degree in Education, and a PhD in the same area, all from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. She also serves as a teacher in the Belo Horizonte Municipal Education Network, where she has held roles as a coordinator and director of public schools.
Evaristo served as Municipal Secretary of Education in Belo Horizonte and as Secretary of Education for Minas Gerais from 2015 to 2018. At the federal level, she was the Secretary for Literacy, Diversity, and Inclusion at the Ministry of Education.
