Report reveals 26 trans individuals elected to city councils in Brazil

A report from the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra), which is still being updated, indicates that at least 26 trans individuals were elected to Brazil's municipal councils in the 2024 elections. While this number is a positive development, it remains below the 30 trans individuals elected in 2020.

“This year, from over 600 candidates, we achieved 26 elected or re-elected individuals, with the potential for even more across Brazil. Most were elected in rural areas, with strong representation from progressive parties, primarily consisting of trans women and transvestites, and an emphasis on Black candidates,” celebrated Antra in a statement on its official website.

The association highlights the lack of data on non-binary and intersex individuals on the Superior Electoral Court's website, asserting that many individuals who identified as trans to the court did so mistakenly.

The text also emphasizes the performance of mayoral candidate Duda Salabert (Democratic Labor Party-PDT), who received 97,315 votes, making her the fifth most-voted candidate.
