The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) decided to penalize a member of the Belarusian for carrying the Russian flag during the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games Wednesday (Sep. 7) at the Maracanã Stadium.

Russia had been banned from these Paralympics following a doping case involving athletes from that country.

The member of the Belarusian delegation had his credentials revoked. The man carried the Russian flag while his country's athletes paraded through the stage. The man had been invited by the Belarusian committee and should not be taking part in the parede, the IPC reported.

“The IPC will contact the Belarusian [the National Paralympic Committee, or NPC,] this morning to remind them that political protests are not allowed in the Paralympic Games,” a note from the IPC reads.
