Brazil’s research institute Butantan exports batches of flu vaccine to Uruguay and Nicaragua. Altogether, 925 thousand doses will be made available to the two nations in a bid to strengthen the stock of shots against the influenza virus.

The first batch has been shipped. Approximately 225 thousand doses have been sent to Nicaragua. Uruguay will receive the remaining 700 thousand doses.

The Butantan vaccine is called “trivalent,” after its capacity to generate immune responses against three variants of the influenza virus: H1N1, the B strain, and H3N2. The last type caused several cases in Brazil last year.

The institution was selected in a call for bids by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), representing the World Health Organization (WHO) in the region. Butantan was accepted after its flu vaccine was included on a list of PAHO inoculations.
