Brazil records second death from monkeypox in Minas state

Victim is a 21-year-old man hospitalized since September 11

Pouso Alegre - a town in the state of Minas Gerais – confirmed on Sunday (Oct. 9) the death of a 21-year-old man from monkeypox. He had comorbidities and had been hospitalized since September 11.

Currently, in the municipality there are 4 confirmed cases (one of them was the patient who died and the others have been isolated at home), 1 is still under analysis, and 45 have been discarded.

Disease in Brazil

According to the bulletin released by the Ministry of Health on Friday (7), there are 8,340 confirmed cases of monkeypox in Brazil. Another 4,586 are under follow-up. The state of São Paulo has the highest number of cases (3,843), followed by Rio de Janeiro (1,120) and Minas Gerais (514). With the death reported this Sunday, the country has confirmed two deaths in Minas Gerais.

Vaccine

According to the Ministry of Health, the first batch of imported vaccines against monkeypox has arrived in the country. The shipment of 9.8 thousand doses landed last Tuesday (4) at Guarulhos Airport in São Paulo.

Brazil has purchased around 50 thousand doses via the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) revolving fund. The following batches are scheduled to be delivered by the end of 2022.
