Achieving the goal of zero deforestation requires Brazil to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance environmental monitoring, and establish protected forest areas.
The monitoring was carried out with the help of satellite images from Imazon. The reduction observed in 2023 was said to have “surpassed the overall drop in deforestation,” which was down 62% between 2022 and 2023.
The 113 items listed in the summit’s Belém Declaration, signed at the Amazon Summit by the eight signatory nations of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, offer no practical solutions to tackle climate change, the NGOs said.
Imazon researchers, based on satellite monitoring analysis, concluded that in April this year, deforestation witnessed a significant decline of 72 percent.
