In the first two months this year, fires reached 211 hectares of the territory, down from 2022’s 557. The shrinkage is said to stem from the crackdown on mining in the region.
The gesture comes in recognition of his efforts to defend the indigenous territory and the Amazon forest, and “symbolizes our ongoing search for dialogue and the decolonization of knowledge,” a statement from the Federal University of São Paulo reads.
The move brings the number of indigenous health medics up 51.5%. “The cause of death of our native people is hunger, malnutrition, and malaria,” said Primary Care Secretary Nésio Fernandes.

Around 340 people of six different communities of the Warao ethnic group live in the area. Some already have residence visas in Brazil while others have refugee status.
