The Brazilian and the Ukrainian heads of state met in New York on Wednesday, a day after the opening of the 78th United Nations General Assembly. It was the first meeting between the two.
The Brazilian president is flying this Monday evening to Rome, where he should meet with the pontiff, Italian President Sergio Mattarella, and Mayor of Rome Roberto Gualtieri.
The meeting aimed to provide Celso Amorim with an understanding of the main demands required to initiate peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
The President clarified the country’s stance concerning the war stating that "Brazil has a clear position: it condemns Russia for invading Ukraine's territorial space."
The meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was a courtesy visit, and the discussions focused on peace rather than war.
