Investments from Brazilian state-run companies reach highest peak in 13 years

Petrobras was the top investor, with a 15.4% rise compared to 2012

Investments made by Brazil’s state-run companies totaled $47.2 billion last year, the highest amount reported since 2000 –15.9% higher than the previous record, in 2012, when $40.65 billion had been invested.

Out of the total amount spent last year, 87.4%, or $41.19, were invested by the Petrobras Group (16 companies altogether), according to data released this Wednesday (Feb. 12) by the Ministry of Planning, Budget and Management.

The Ministry further reported that, from 2003 to 2013, the real (inflation-corrected) increase in investments was 205%, with a yearly average growth rate of 11.8% in the last decade. Additionally, investments have gone from 1.3% to 2.4% of Brazil’s GDP (Gross Domestic Product, all the wealth produced in a country) within this period.

Apart from Petrobras, whose investments grew 15.4% against 2012, another outstanding state-owned company was Eletrobras, with $2.99 billion – 22.9% higher than two years ago.

Federal companies in the financial sector invested $1.41 billion last year, with a rise of 9.5% compared to 2012.
