Bank fees surged nine times as much as inflation
The fees charged by the country's eight largest banks over the last three years surged up to 169%, a rate 8.6 times higher than the inflation observed in the period, data from consumer defense association Proteste reveal.
The survey compares the fees as they they appear on each bank's fee list. The sharpest increase was reported in Bradesco's Exclusive Fácil service package, which cost a monthly $5.74 in 2013, but should rise to $14.44 next month. Yearly costs under this service will total $185.24—$116.41 more than 2013.
The survey also found packages with up to $18.45 per month in expenses. A case in point is Santander's Van Gogh Max, with a yearly $221.45.
The study surveyed fees charged by the publicly-owned banks Banrisul, Banco do Brasil, Caixa Econômica Federal, and the private Citibank, HSBC, Itaú, and Santander.
Proteste notes it is the banks' duty to make publicly known the value of all fees as well as what services are provided in each package.
