Brazilian industry lost 0.7% of its jobs from June to July this year, according to a survey released today (Sep. 18) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The total number of staff employed in July this year is down 6.4% from July 2014. The study also registered a fall year-to-date (5.4%) and in the 12-month period (4.9%).

The 6.4% drop from July 2014 is attributed to job cuts in 17 of the 18 sectors surveyed by IBGE, most notably means of transportation (-11.9%), machines and electronic and communication devices (-15.1%), machines and equipment (-9.1%), metal goods (-10.7%), and foods and drinks (-2.8%).

IBGE also reported a negative figure for the amount of hours paid and in the real payroll (inflation considered). The number of hours paid dropped 1.2% against June this year, 7.2% compared with July 2014, 6% year-to-date, and 5.5% in the 12-month period. As for the real payroll, the reduction stands at 1.8% against June this year, 6% from July 2014, 6.3% year-to-date, and 5% in the 12-month period.
