Brazil cuts 1.5 million jobs at formal labor market in 2015

The sectors that recorded the largest drop were the manufacturing industry and civil construction— 608,878 and 416,959 jobs, respectively
Brazil registered a cut of 1,542,371 formal jobs in 2015, down 3.74% compared to the total number of formal jobs from last year.
The number of jobs for December 2015 totaled 39,663,114, lower than the result recorded in December 2014 (41,205,000).
The sectors that recorded the largest drop were the manufacturing industry and civil construction— 608,878 and 416,959 jobs, respectively.
Agriculture was the only sector with a positive results in 2015, creating 9,821 more jobs than in the previous year.
According to the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Miguel Rossetto, 2015 was a hard year and the result is the worst recorded since 1992: "The figures are not good. But the gains of recent years are protected because the number of jobs remains high," he said.
Ministry's data show that all the country's major regions reduced the rate of formal employment: In the Southeast, 891,429 jobs were cut (4.09%), in the Northeast, 254,402 (3.74%) and in the South, 229,320 (3.08%). The North and the Central-west regions reported the lowest cuts, 100,212 (5.15%) and 67,008 formal jobs (2.08%), respectively.
Similarly, all the 27 federal states decreased the number of jobs in 2015. São Paulo, leader in creating jobs, had the biggest drop in absolute numbers: 466 686 jobs (3.65%).
