Brazilian businessmen remain pessimistic about the current and future economic and corporate conditions. This is shown by the Industrial Confidence Index (ICEI), released today (Jan. 18) by the National Confederation of Industry (CNI).

In January, the index stood at 36.5 points, 7.9 percentage points below the value recorded for the same month in 2015 and 18.4 points below the historical average (54.9 points). The index ranges from zero to one hundred points. The more the rate is below the 50-point mark, the greater and more widespread is the pessimism.

According to the survey, the confidence is lower among construction's executives. For this sector, the index rate reached 35.1 points below the national rate. For the extrative industry, the indicator posted 44 points, and for the manufacturing, 36.4 points.

For small companies, the ICEI stood at 35.1 points, well below the national rate. For large companies, it reached 37.6 points and, on average, it stood at 35.5 points.

In this index edition, 2,772 companies were heard, between January 4th and 13th. Of the total, 1,084 are small companies, 1,063 are medium-sized companies, and 625 are large companies.
