Brazil closed out 2021 with a positive balance of 2,730,597 formal job openings. Over the course of the year, 20,699,802 admissions and 17,969,205 layoffs were reported. The data were disclosed by the country’s Ministry of Labor and Social Security today (Jan. 31).

In December, however, a 265,811 reduction in job posts was observed—the difference between 1,703,721 layoffs and 1,437,910 admissions.

The total amount of active formal jobs in the country stood at 41,289,692—down 0.64 percent from the previous month.

Temporary hiring

According to Labor and Social Security Minister Onyx Lorenzoni, the December performance was expected, since “as is usually the case in Brazil, we have reports of workers fired mostly among those under a temporary regime.”

The minister also pointed out that, since the beginning of the Bolsonaro administration, the country has registered 3,183,221 new job posts.

Figures by sector

In the last month of 2021, the only of the five sectors of the economy to display a positive balance for formal job openings was trade, with 9,013. Industry posted a negative 92,047; construction 52,033; farming, forest production, fishing, and aquaculture 26.073; and services 104,670.

Average pay

The average salary upon admission in December was $332.38, showing a real increase of BRL 1.51, or 0.08 percent.
