Brazil’s production of crops in 2022 is likely to reach a record 271.9 million tons, up 7.4 percent—or 18.7 million tons—from 2021’s 253.2 million.

The survey Levantamento Sistemático da Produção Agrícola (“Systematic Survey on Agricultural Production”), published today by statistics agency IBGE, shows that the area to be harvested encompasses 71.2 million hectares—3.8 percent (2.6 million hectares) more than 2021 and 0.3 percent (217.2 thousand hectares) larger than what had been forecast last month.

Combined, rice, corn, and soybeans account for 93 percent of the predicted output and 97.8 percent of the area harvested. Compared to 2021, areas saw a 5.8 percent growth for corn (6.9 percent in the first harvest, 5.4 in the second), 7.2 percent for upland cotton, and 3.6 percent for soybeans. The area for rice is down 0.9 percent and wheat slipped 1.7 percent.

The production of soybeans is expected to stand at 131.8 million tons, down 4.7 percent from the third prognosis, published in January, and 2.3 percent from the yield in the previous year.

Corn, in turn, was estimated at 109.9 million tons—0.9 percent up from the previous month and 25.2 up from 2021. Brazil’s rice output should add up to 11 million tons, down 4.9 percent from last year.
