Brazil creates 328 thousand formal jobs in February

Brazil closed out February 2022 having created 328,507 formal jobs, as per a report from the New General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Novo CAGED), unveiled today (Mar. 29) by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

The balance comes as a result of 2.013 million admissions and 1.685 million layoffs—the best performance for the month in the time series started in 2010, second only to 2021’s 397,915, the ministry stated.

This is the first time the monthly total of admissions exceeded 2 million, the ministry’s Executive Secretary Bruno Dalcolmo pointed out, further noting the result cannot be seen as structural, adding that the current trend is downwards.

“We have seen it is natural to expect a slowdown from the hiring level last year. It’s a natural process; companies will not continue hiring as they did last year forever,” he added.

The figures show that in February, the five groups of economic activity displayed a positive balance, especially in services, where 215,421 new jobs were generated, chiefly across activities of public administration, defense and social security, education, human health, and social services.

Formal jobs

Following the February result, Brazil’s active formal jobs stand at 41,157,217, up 0.8 percent from the previous month. Year to date, the balance is reported at 478,862 formal jobs, stemming from 3,818,888 new admissions and 3,340,026 dismissals.

The data also show that the average hiring wage in February was BRL 1,878.66, down BRL 61.14 or 3.15 percent from January.
